How to Enjoy your Trip while Stuck in the Airport

"The limits of my language are the limits of my world." ——Ludwig Wittgenstein

Stuck and airport may be two words in the English dictionary that should not be put in the same sentence. Unfortunately, more often than not, this is the case for most tourists. You look up at the departures or arrival board, scan down the list for your flight and see a big red flash reading DELAYED or do we even mention the word CANCELLED. All too often people take this as serious torture and agony. It is time to sit down and realize that being stuck at the airport may not always be a bad thing. Sure, you may be late for a wedding, getting to your big business meeting or picking up your daughter at the train station, but did you ever stop to think that no matter what you do, you as a single human being won't be able to change the outcome of this situation?

Your flight is delayed (or cancelled), so while you're here, stuck at the airport, try to make the best of it. Don't think of this time as strenuous and exhausting, think of it as down time, time for yourself, time for you to do whatever you want (provided that you don't have a group of screaming children with you).

Another great tip to avoid waiting in airports is to have all your required documents on hand and readily accessible at all times. Avoid waiting in long lines by making sure your ESTA Visa is filled out correctly and you have all required supporting documents. Here are just a few ways to get you thinking positive about your delays while waiting in the airport:

Window Shopping

We all know that shopping in an airport can be out of this world expensive, but what is the harm in window shopping? Maybe it is nearing Christmas or your best friend's birthday, use this time to go window shopping and make notes on great ideas for those Christmas or birthday gifts.

Finish that Report you've been meaning to start

Most people have that one deadly project on the backburner because they have found every excuse in the book to delay the completion of the project. Today is the day, get out a pen and paper and start writing. You have time to spend at the airport, and you sure don't want to sit there fiddling your thumbs and staring at the people walking passed. Though it isn't often fun waiting around, you can always be doing something better with that wait time, like finishing this paper so when you get to your vacation spot or when you get home, it won't be on your mind.

Read an entire book front to back

When was the last time you read an entire book front to back in one sitting? Most people in this day and age do not have the time to sit there and enjoy an entire novel from start to finish. This is a neat challenge to set for yourself while at the airport. There should be a few different shops around the airport that sell books at a reasonable price, pick out your favorite one and give it a shot!

Have a nap

This is where packing strategically comes in handy, always remember to pack comfy for your flight. Whether your flight is 3 hours or 13 hours, you may get stuck somewhere you didn't plan on and have to wait there in your dress suit if you don't plan for this to happen. Bring along a neck pillow with you, some soft trousers and a cozy jumper. After all these other plans listed above, you're going to need some time to close your eyes.

Watch a movie

Most airports today will have access to free internet, but when you don't have that option, that is usually when travelers start to get annoyed and restless. Do not expect wireless internet at all airports, some airports will charge outrageous fees to use their internet services. Instead, plan ahead and download a few movies you've been wanting to watch onto your phone, laptop, tablet or any other device you may own that is capable of playing movies. If you aren't comfortable using these devices, by all means, bring the portable DVD player and buy a few movies before boarding your flight. Movies are always a guaranteed way to make the time pass quicker.
