Cristiano Ronaldo famously joined Manchester United for £12.2 million from Sporting Lisbon in 2003 and his former coach has revealed why he joined the Red Devils and not Arsenal.

Sporting coach, Laszlo Boloni promoted Ronaldo from Sporting's youth ranks to the first team and switched his position from centre-forward to the wing

He explained the reason why United beat Arsenal in signing Ronaldo, who went on to win 10 trophies at Old Trafford.

"There was a lot of interest in Cristiano Ronaldo. I remember Arsene Wenger collecting information about Ronaldo," the Romanian told Inside Futbol.

"He invited him in 2002 to Arsenal's training ground. Also many French clubs were interested in him.

"At that time Manchester United had a good relationship with Sporting Lisbon.

"It was normal for Ronaldo to move to Manchester United and it was a great choice from him."

Ronaldo made 292 appearances for United, scoring 118 goals and assisting a further 65 for his teammates before joining Real Madrid in 2009.
