Lee Chong Wei

Former world number one Lee Chong Wei has been banned for eight months for doping by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

The 32-year-old Malaysian tested positive for the anti-inflammatory drug dexamethasone during the World Championships in August.

But Lee, who has been suspended since November, will be able to compete again on 1 May after the ban was backdated.

The BWF said Lee had not intended to cheat but had been "negligent".

Lee, who has won 55 titles, has not played since losing last year's World Championship final and seen his ranking fall to 30th in the world.

The BWF hearing panel decided not to impose the full two-year ban.

They said the degree of negligence was "rather light" and Lee had not realised he had ingested the substance contained in the casings of gelatin capsules.

Lee's silver medal he won at last year's World Championships has also been rescinded.
